Friday, 11th - 13th of August. Somewhere in the middle of Styria, Austria. Unlike every year before, we really have tickets for the Grand Prix of Austria. And we are excited. Of course - it is our first time to see a GP race live.
And of course we know about the racing skills of these, we would say insane men riding in circles with an average speed of more than 200 kilometers per hour. Since we only knew the races only from television, we are completely stunned about how fast the riders go in real life. With leaning angles at about 55° and corner speed of more than 150 kph, our conversation reduces to “insane”, “did you see that..?” and “this is just nuts”.
The highlight of this weekend is the races on Sunday. Driving the circuit in a bulk where the distances between the bikes is sometimes less than a meter is simply astonishing. And of course breathtaking.
We agree that our highlight is the race in the MotoGP class. Knowing that the Ducati has big advantages on this up-and-down course, we expect this race to be extremely exciting. And there we go - on the long straights up the hill, the Ducati Desmo 17 GP from Andrea Dovizioso has a massive advantage compared to the Honda driven by Marc Marquez. But when it comes to corners, the driving technique of 24 year old Marquez seems to leverage the laws of physics. The result: an astonishing fight for the first place over the last laps and a final decision with a last try to overtake Dovizioso just in that very last corner. “Dovi” wins the race by an advance of 0.176 seconds.
And of course there is also the side events. From huge stages with concerts from a bunch of cover bands to freestyle MX shows - there is program all day long.
Since a picture paints more than a thousand words, we have collected some impressions. Have some fun and maybe we will see each other at the Grand Prix next year. We will be there. Promised!
