It somehow seems crazy what David Widmann has built from scratch. Founded in the middle of nowhere, the Carinthian countryside, the young entrepreneur’s motorcycle repair shop started selling bikes of all types around the globe under the brand name of NCT Motorcycles Custom Bikes. He’s also the proof that geographical location doesn’t matter to succeed – if you do your work well, you will do well.

We’ve known David for quite some time, appreciating his ideas and zeal and of course, the dedication and precision of him and his team to bring back new shine to a bike.
As we’re all sharing the same passion, we thought it would be great if David would share his expert knowledge with a wider audience.
As of now, you will find David’s tips on various topics on our blog every month. As it is still summer and hopefully the sunny weather continues, we’ll start off the series with tips on how to treat your bike when the action is hotting up with the biking season well underway.

Tips from the specialist: David Widmann, NCT

Especially after winter or long distance rides, checking your motorcycle is recommended. At least the following five steps should be considered prior to hitting the road:

Schritt 1: TYRES

The tyres are the most important thing for the rider and the motorcycle, they are point of contact with the asphalt and providing traction to it – in short, they’re responsible that we’re not losing the grip! Thus both the tyre tread depth – not below 1.6mm – and the tyre pressure should be checked before your trip starts. Watch out! The latter varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.
If your tyres are older or maybe even showing porous spots or cracks, it is absolutely necessary to renew them!

Schritt 2: OIL LEVEL

Checking the oil level is a quick job; either with a dipstick or through the sight glass. This depends on the motorcycle’s manufacturer.

Schritt 3: SCREWS

If you haven’t been riding your motorcycle for a while (hopefully not at this time of the year, but you never know) you should check on the important screws before taking a longer trip. Loose screws can often be spotted easily and are an indicator for other loose parts which can quickly become a safety risk. Check, tighten and off we go!

Schritt 4: BRAKE LINES

Something’s leaking?! Brake lines should be inspected for porosity and/or leakage, or rather check if you can spot something. In addition, take a look at the brake fluid, the brake pads and the brake discs.

Schritt 5: LIGHTS AND SIGNALS

Last but not least, before you hit the road, make sure to check your lights, including sidelight/parking light, headlight, brake light, indicators and number plate light.
This is also very important for road safety! Properly functioning lights are crucial to ensure good visibility of the motorcycle and of its rider.

All set! Have a safe ride, the next issue will be out in August!

The dried-up river bed blurs in front of my burning eyes. Drops of sweat tickle on the scalp under my motocross helmet. Even the Gore-Tex membrane seems to have long since given up its mission of allowing water vapour to pass through to the outside of my riding suit. In the sauna, now would be the time to pour water onto the rocks. But it’s late autumn in southern Spain and I never thought I would get so sweaty when riding a motorcycle at just over ten degrees Celsius...

Which is where I want to watch the sunrise. Getting there at 5 o’clock, as bright orange glow starts to hit the Horizon...

The morning sunshine at Loch Ken wakes me up on Friday the 18th of August and reminds me to pack up my tent and everything that belongs to it. *Bohemian Paradise - Česky Ráj* is the name of the country just behind the border, it is almost untouched by tourism, and yet it is so beautiful that one can cry 😭 Behind every corner there is a castle, there are endless curves, even mountains (our Austrian calls it 'high hill'), quirky hamlets, caves to ride in and beer in exact temperature specifications.
