FROM VIENNA TO HALLSTATT

Published by Peter Benkö at 03 settembre 2015 in Percorsi
In June we went to Hallstatt, a World Heritage Village in the Salzkammergut, Austria. By now it's really touristy there and the locals seemed partly pissed about the crowded streets. When we talked to them they confirmed our suspicion, at the same time they could appreciate the great business people are bringing to this small village so we felt...bearable..

The landscape around this townlet is just spectacular. We stay in Obertraun, which is on the southeastern side of the Hallstätter lake. Coming from Bad Aussee there is a fabulous mountain road on L701 turning to L547 with a stunning view, leading to Obertraun and continuing to Hallstatt and further up on the west side of the lake. At some point there is a very narrow tunnel that has a scenic outpost in the middle of it with a view on the lake. You can only ride along the lake on the west side. The eastern side only has walking and cycling tracks right next to the water.

Driving from Hallstatt to Mariazell features one of the most beautiful roads we've ever been on. On the B145 you'll pass Tauplitz where you should take the time and invest 5 Euro to drive up the Tauplitzalmstraße which is a very curvy, nice road up to the top of the mountain with a comprehensive view on the alps in this area. Continuing on the federal highway you drive through Trautenfels and keep left on to E651 towards Liezen. From there we kept driving on B146 which leads you directly through Nationalpark Gesäuse, located in the mountainous Upper Styrain region within the Ennstal Alps and the steep water gap of the Enns river between Admont and Hieflau.

Driving right next to the river gives you gorgeous panorama along this part of the track. In Hieflau you keep left on B115, B25 and eventually on B24 which leads you through the Ybbstaler Alps directly to Mariazell. This track as well features awesome curves, fantastic panorama and you'll just smile beneath your helmet for more than 70km. Mariazell is one of the Meccas of motorcyclists in Austria - grab a coffee there and stroll around this nice townlet, it's worth it.

The dried-up river bed blurs in front of my burning eyes. Drops of sweat tickle on the scalp under my motocross helmet. Even the Gore-Tex membrane seems to have long since given up its mission of allowing water vapour to pass through to the outside of my riding suit. In the sauna, now would be the time to pour water onto the rocks. But it’s late autumn in southern Spain and I never thought I would get so sweaty when riding a motorcycle at just over ten degrees Celsius...

Well, this morning starts early as usual, as my military service gave me one of the best and worst traits in the world, not being able to sleep well. So, I get up to watch the sunrise in one of my favourite spots. From my home in Shellharbour I travel through Port Kembla, Scarborough, Coalcliff, all the way up to Bald Hill. Which is where I want to watch the sunrise. Getting there at 5 o’clock, as bright orange glow starts to hit the Horizon...

The morning sunshine at Loch Ken wakes me up on Friday the 18th of August and reminds me to pack up my tent and everything that belongs to it. At the end of the first chapter, Marc Steinhardt left the European mainland behind and now continues his British-Irish motorcycle adventure after spending the first night in the camping tent. After a surprisingly restful night and a self-made breakfast (scrambled eggs etc.), I start to put all my camping stuff back on the bike. Of course, it doesn't turn out as easily and space-optimized as it had at home...

THE CURVES ON THE ROAD: BOHEMIAM PARADISE - ČESKI RAJ

Published by CAETHE / THE CURVES at 17 novembre 2017 in Percorsi
*Bohemian Paradise - Česky Ráj* is the name of the country just behind the border, it is almost untouched by tourism, and yet it is so beautiful that one can cry 😭 Behind every corner there is a castle, there are endless curves, even mountains (our Austrian calls it 'high hill'), quirky hamlets, caves to ride in and beer in exact temperature specifications.
